Bon’s Web Walk

I’ve got one more story to post from Melbourne – about a trip to visit Bon’s loyal roadie Darcy in the Yarra Valley. It’s just in with the experts for “fact checking” before it goes live, but while we wait, lets think a little about writing technologies, shall we?

Bon wrote a shitload of letters. We must remember, kiddies, that in the 1970s there was no internet. There was no email. There were no blogs. If Bon were travelling the world playing gigs today, would he still send letters?

Would he run his own blog? (Now THAT would be something.) Would he, perchance, have his own webcam TV show, or a whacky Alice Cooper or Bob Dylan style radio broadcast? Or be the star of his own Osbournes reality TV show?

Speaking of reality TV …over at the Bon Scott Club (a yahoo group dedicated to keeping Bon’s hell-raising spirit alive forever), the fans are playing a game inspired by those “vote em off” shows, called “AC/DC Song Survivor”.

Each week, the club members choose from a full list of all the AC/DC songs ever released. Each club member gets one vote – and the song with the most votes is “evicted”.

Note that it’s not necessary to provide a reason for your vote, but many members choose to provide a short and amusing rationale, for instance:

My vote this week is against Let’s Make It ’cause it’s the sappiest AC/DC song ever.

I choose Love Bomb Reason…..Not a big fan of the Ball Breaker album and that tune stands out as one of the worst of the lot.

Safe in NYC, it is a fun song to play on bass. its one of those songs you can do anything with, but it does suck.

So far, the game is into week 9, and at its current rate, it should take about another 130 weeks to pick an ultimate winner. The following songs have already been voted off:

Let’s Make It
Love Bomb
Evil Walks
Safe In New York City
You Shook Me All Night Long
This Means War
House Of Jazz
Mistress For Christmas
Who Made Who (follow that link for hilarious description of the video clip to this song)
Night Prowler
Damned
Love Song
The Furor

If I’m not mistaken (and I could well be) all of these except Love Song are Brian Johnson Era songs…(And in fact, it seems Love Song’s genesis actually precedes Bon…)

By the time they work through the full list of songs, one single “best song ever” will emerge victorious. And no doubt there will be plenty of good natured muttering and dissent along the way.

Read this post by the club’s tireless leader Jon Talisman (who also runs AC/DC news) in which he describes the rules of the game, and gives a full list of songs to choose from…

  1. WELL I GUESS MOST WILL KNOW OF THE SIMPSONS EPISODE WHERE 20 ODD YEARS AFTER MARGE SENDS “RINGO STARR” A MEMBER OF THE BEATLES BAND… A PICTURE SHE DREW … SHE GETS A REPLY FROM RINGO…

WELL THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BON… TODAY SIFTING THROUGH THE MILLIONS OF LETTERS PEOPLE HAD SENT… EVENTUALLY REPLYING TO EVERY ONE OF THEM…

    NOT JOKING EITHER…

  2. Thanks Jon. Emboldened by this post, I actually went over and cast my first vote! I voted for “love at first feel“. Here is my message to the group:

    Hi all

this is my first time voting! Initially I thought I was too new to the world of AC/DC to vote. I actually haven’t listened to much from the Brian era yet.

But then I thought, well, is there anything from the Bon era we could do away with?

It wasn’t easy, but one song I could probably live without is “Love at First Feel”.

Of course, I appreciate Bon’s lyrical genius in lines like:

“I didn’t know if you were legal tender
But I spent you just the same”

And even though the song no doubt refers to an actual encounter Bon had with an underage girl, I’m not voting for it because of some sort of moral outrage.

No, it’s because of the half-baked concept of “love at first feel.” As a twist on “love at first sight”, it’s just a bit forced. For me, the humour falls flat.

There you have it, my first vote!

    Cheers
    Lucas
