What is the Bon Scott Blog?

The Bon Scott Blog is a project by Sydney Artist Lucas Ihlein. Between January and May 2008, Lucas will run a blog in which he describes his experience of coming to know the life and work of great Aussie Rocker Bon Scott. At the beginning of the project, Lucas was not a fan of AC/DC. You can read about his process of immersion! He is meeting fans, visiting cemeteries, chasing up Bon’s old friends and lovers, attending concerts, and listening to a lot of heavy rock.

Do get in touch with your Bon stories, opinions, ideas, recordings, photos, and movies.
Do let me know of any tribute bands, mad collectors, obsessive fans, or cultural studies professors who might enrich our understanding of the life and work of Mr Ronald (“Bon”) Scott.

Who is The Bon Scott Blogger?

I’m Lucas Ihlein, an artist living in Sydney, Australia. I sometimes do blogging-as-art projects. For instance, in 2005, I spent 2 months blogging about the small country town of Kellerberrin, in Western Australia. The next year, I did the same thing in my own suburb, Petersham. Or you can read my all-purpose, not-very-often-updated blog over here.

I’m beginning this project, in January 2008, as “non-fan” of Bon Scott and AC/DC. Or, to be more specific: I’m not “against” their work…it just hasn’t, for whatever reason, crossed my radar. So this blog will, possibly, track my evolution from ignorance to fandom. Who knows? Feel free to influence me as you wish… Simply leave a comment after a post, or email me: lucas[at]bonscottblog[dot]com

What is The Bon Scott Project?

Between January and June, 2008, The Fremantle Arts Centre is presenting “The Bon Scott Project” to celebrate the life and times of Bon Scott. Bon grew up in Fremantle, and is buried there in the cemetery, where is grave is the destination for thousands of pilgrims each year. It is only fitting that the Fremantle Arts Centre should pay homage to Bon! There will be a big programme including performances, exhibitions and new art commissions (including this blog!) and even an exhibition of Bon’s letters (he was a prolific letter writer) curated by Katie Dyer.

Tell me about the Bon Scott Photographic Project!

Fremantle artist Rebecca Dagnall is calling for Bon Scott fans to come forward and present themselves to be photographed. Bec is interested not just in you, but in your special place. The place where you’ve set up a shrine to Bon in your own home, your den, your office, your garage, the local pool hall… Wherever it is that you have set aside a little bit of your space for Bon and the boys. For all the details, click here.

Tell me about the Bon Scott Electronic Sign Project!

There’s a red LCD sign you can see from your car as you drive over the old bridge into Fremantle. This sign has been made available to us by the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce during the exhibition. Every day messages from fans from all around the world will be beamed up onto the sign! Stay tuned for details on how you can get involved! The screen looks like this.

What about the new Bon Scott Bronze Statue?

On February 24, 2008, at a memorial celebration concert, a new bronze statue of AC/DC singer Bon Scott was unveiled.

We have a permanent exhbition here at the Museum for Bon Scott and every year durning Bonfest (We have a huge Bon Scott Festival every year in the Town)We have a much larger Bon Exhibition. For which we are always looking for fresh ideas and objects to display.

  3. Hello,

I want to visit Australia next year. Is there any way to see what was displayed in the Bon Scott Exhibit in Fremantle? What can I see besides his grave and his statute? Any suggestions for other cities in Australia to visit? Thanks.

    Darleen

  4. John Darcy, are you Bon Scott? The positions of your tattoos are similar to Bon Scott, if not I apologise, if so, cool.
